My wife and I travel all over this great country of ours in our Georgie Boy Motor Coach. And this month I have decided to write about Hood Canal here in Washington State. It truly is an area that is made for recreation we have everything from clam digging to oyster harvesting and scuba diving and everything in between. It is hard to believe that this recreational paradise is only some 80 miles from Seattle and about 140 miles from Portland OR.
Hood Canal is the only true saltwater fjord in the lower United States. It’s clear deep waters provide world-class shrimp and salmon fishing, scuba diving, and miles of pristine shoreline for boaters, kayakers, beachcombers and lovers of nature.
Fill up, rest up and gear up in nearby Shelton, an historic logging town on Highway 101, just minutes from Hood Canal. Fabulous restaurants, antiques, boutiques, a museum and local microbrewery await you. Visitor information can also be found here.
On Hood Canal, find lodging in Belfair, Union, Potlatch, Hoodsport and Lilliwaup. Three state parks, all with camping, picnic tables, public boat launches and beaches, allow families to spend the whole day in sand and sunshine. The Tahuya State Forest is famous for its challenging ORV trails, and Theler Wetlands Trail is a bird watcher's delight bring your binoculars.
Immediately west of Hood Canal is Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest. Visitors will find mountain trails, thrilling vistas, waterfalls and more in this wilderness paradise. Lake Cushman, the Mt. Ellinor Trail and the Staircase entrance to Olympic National Park are just three of the top attractions.
From luxurious lodging, fine dining, wineries and wine shops––to the simple pleasures of beach combing, sightseeing and rain forest walks, Hood Canal in Mason County has it all. |
